What to Wear for an Elegant Evening at the Casino

These days, many casinos include information about the dress code on their websites or other promotional materials. Before your visit, you can always check for a specified dress code. If no dress code is specified, then as a general rule of thumb, you can follow these guidelines. A day trip to the casino often requires dressy casual or business formal attire. For an evening at the casino, however, it’s best to assume that the dress code is semi-formal or black tie.

What Men Should Wear

Semi-formal attire for men is a suit with a white dress shirt. Choose a black bowtie, a cummerbund, and a conservative dinner jacket. Black or deep blue are appropriate choices for the jacket. Men should also wear black patent leather dress shoes or Oxford-style shoes. Note that if the dress code is “black tie optional,” men may choose to forego the black bowtie in favor of a conservative tie.

What Ladies Should Wear

Ladies have more versatility when dressing for an elegant evening at the casino. A semi-formal style for ladies may mean anything from a cocktail dress to a pantsuit with a palazzo cut. However, it’s best to err on the side of caution. Senior ladies will want to dress conservatively, in an outfit that doesn’t show too much skin. If you opt for a pantsuit, look for one with a dressy fabric, such as cashmere or silk. A long-sleeved gown is always appropriate, as is a long skirt with a dressy top and a formal jacket. Wear comfortable, yet dressy evening shoes and complete your look with a few select pieces of fine or fashion jewelry.
